Greetings one and all!  I've decided to come out of my 3-month blog hiatus to announce some exciting news!  Last night I asked Lisa to marry me atop the highest hill in Scappoose -- overlooking a forest, Scappoose, and the Portland skyline....and much to my relief, she said "yes!  yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!"  And then we ate tacos.

Location: La Quinta Hotel

Greetings my faithful disciples.  If you are reading this entry, you are one of the Chosen Ones.  "What does that mean?" you ask.  Actually, it really doesn't mean anything since this blog is public access.  But thanks for reading anyway!

Today I attended my 2nd graduation in 3 months.  This time it wasn't for the completion of a degree, but rather for the completion of the six-week Air and Space Basic Course.  Basically I learned about 200 new acronyms and earned a diploma.  Woo hoo!  Anyway, after the lavish ceremony, a friend of mine and I took off enroute to our very first assignments at Randolph AFB, Texas.  I'm currently a little over half way there, enjoying a little R & R in Lake Charles, Louisiana.  When we arrive tomorrow afternoon, the apartment hunting begins!  Hopefully I'll have a place by this weekend!  If not, it means that I'm probably stuck living in a dorm for well over a year -- LAME-O.

Guess that's about all for the moment.  If you're getting bored reading my bland entries, please scroll down a ways and look for my story about the spider from last summer.  Classic.  Anyway, tune in next time.  Peace out to all my homeslices!

Greetings to all who care as well as those who may have accidentally clicked on the Xanga link in my AIM profile.

Operation Enduring ASBC as been underway for about five weeks now.  Major combat operations in the region have ended, with the exception of a final exam. Only a few minor skirmishes are expected between now and graduation.

In my time in Alabama, I've done a great many things.  Well, actually not that many.  But I DID throw out the honorary first pitch at a Major League baseball game.  The fans all chanted my name in unison.  Someone started the wave and it ripped around the stadium through thousands of fans in mere seconds.  As I stood on the mound, I glanced at each of the bases, imagining that an opposing player was leading off.  As adrenaline surged into every inch of my body, I wound up and released a deadly fast ball.  It tore over the the plate into the awaiting glove of the catcher.  The stadium erupted in cheers and the umpired yelled "play ball!"  A sincere "thank you" to the Montgomery Biscuits AA baseball team for letting me throw out a wild first pitch, and the catcher for managing to snag it.

For those who are interested, the next leg of my several-thousand mile journey across the United States will take me to Randolph AFB in Universal City, Texas, just north of San Antonio.  I called my incoming unit the other day to get some information about housing on/around the base, but the "helpful" LT on the other end told me I'd have to just wait until I show up.  Great first impression, eh?

Well folks, this will have to be all for now.  I've got to go run like the wind to help my flight win the time trials for our next challenge.  Tune in next time!

Ciao!

Matthew's Log, Star Date 0611.05

This message is brought to you by:  Sleep Inn "Stay here and sleep in!"

Hello folks!  I'm logged in from my hotel room in Topeka, Kansas.  I'm a little behind schedule (I should be staying in Missouri tonight), but when your car f's up along the way, setbacks like these happen.  Let me explain -- a couple days ago I was on my way to Rock Springs, Wyoming.  Around 100 miles from my destination, I decided I should refuel.  Shortly before pulling off on the exit ramp, I heard a clunk. *uh oh* I think, but I don't hear anything else, so maybe it was just something I ran over...but when I went to hit the brakes I heard a terrible grinding sound and my car stopped moving, as though the brakes had locked up.  So at this point, I'm blocking the end of the freeway exit ramp.  Traffic is piling up, a police officer comes, the tow truck comes, and I'm on my way to a repair shop.  Unfortunately, they were already closed, so I wasn't going anywhere that night.  I left a note in the shop's key drop box and checked myself into a hotel room.  Then yesterday, after talking with the mechanics, they said that they wouldn't be getting to my car until late afternoon at the earliest (this is on a Friday and they don't work on weekends)!  Dejected, I made some calls and discovered a small shop that could fit me in around 11:00.  *wahoo!*  The diagnosis -- Les Schwab screwed up when inspecting my brakes and made it possible for a bolt holding on the caliper joint to come out, and it did, causing the caliper to slip out of place and start binding (mechanic talk for grinding down) with the wheel.  That explains both the clunk and the grind sound.  Anyway, I was on my way a little after 2:00pm, putting me 6 hours behind schedule, but at least on the road before Monday.  BTW, I'm supposed to report to work on Tuesday morning.  That had potential for absolute disaster.

Since then, the trip has been uneventful, which is really nice.  I enjoyed listening to a Book on CD that Lisa sent me and replaying the same CDs several times over.  And tonight, I shelled out $65 to stay at the Sleep Inn, which as a microwave, fridge, high speed internet, a sweet shower, and Coke machines within 10 feet of my door.  What's even cooler is that I'm getting the Federal Government Discount at all the places I stay because I'm on orders.  Yeah!

Anyway, that should bring everyone up to date.  I'll see what I can do about getting back online in the next few days.  But then again, the only mail I've gotten was junk mail and no one is online, so maybe I won't.  I guess we'll see!  Hope the summer is going well for you all.  With that, peath out Napoleons!
